The purpose of this puja is to show one’s devotional gratitude for the lord, considering he was the savior of people in Braj from unprecedented deluge caused by infuriated Lord Indra by holding the Govardhan Hill on his little finger. Hence, the devotional association and affection of the devotees for Lord Krishna is one of the reasons why this festival is so important and is celebrated with happiness and reverence by the devotees.
What Is The Story Behind Celebrating Govardhan Puja?
The legend has it that the people of Braj used to worship Lord Indra during the autumn season. Krishna objected to the ritual, saying the citizens of Braj must offer their prayer and devotions to none other than Govardhan Hill, the actual benefactor for providing natural resources to sustain their livelihood. The point Krishna made was deemed a direct insult to the ego of Lord Indra, who didn’t take it lying down and, in rage, thundered heavy downpour upon Braj creating aquatic havoc. Soon the villagers were to be washed away in the deluge when Krishna, though younger than most villagers, lifted the mountain Govardhan on his little finger as if it were as light as cotton. Underneath the uplifted Govardhan hill, the villagers found shelter from the deluge created by enraged Indra. The mayhem continued for the duration of 8 days till enraged Indra calmed down and succumbed to the divine power of Krishna. Grateful for saving their lives from the havoc, the villagers offered their prayer and Prasad to Krishna, who then took the form of the mountain itself and obliged the villagers for their devotions. Since then, the festival is known as Govardhan puja and is hailed as one of the most sacred festivals in India and is an equally important celebration as Krishna’s other festival called Krishna Janmashtami.
