Also known as Bhima Ekadashi or Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi, the day of Nirjala Ekadashi is highly auspicious and important for the staunch devotees of Lord Vishnu. The story behind Nirjala Ekadashi coming into existence dates back to the Mahabharata era when Bhima (the second brother among five Pandavas) showed his desire to observe all the fasts. However, being an avid food lover, Bhima couldn’t control his hunger and so he sought advice from the sage Vyasa. The sage advised Bhima to observe Nirjala Ekadashi. Through the rigorous observance of Nirjala Ekadashi, Bhima finally attained the virtue of all the 24 Ekadashis. Since then, the concept of observing Nirjala Ekadashi came into being and is followed by religious abstinence from water.
Cautions To Maintain During Nirjala Ekadashi
- Since Nirjala Ekadashi is a water-less fast, therefore, drinking even a drop of water is strictly forbidden. Hence, devotees must avoid water at any cost while observing the fast.
- Devotees should keep chanting and praying to Lord Vishnu.
- Avoid eating any grains on Ekadashi as they may contaminate you with sin.
